Insurance Coverage and Grants

Your Emotional Well Being is Important - Get What You Deserve
For anyone who may going through Chemotherapy treatments or are dealing with some level of emotion due to another condition, I know that this may be a trying time physically and emotionally right now and calling and dealing with reimbursement may seem too much and just another thing to have to deal with. Don't let that stop you from doing something for yourself that could ease some stress at the moment.

A hair piece that can restore your confidence and self-esteem helping your emotional state to heal is just as important as a medication you take to treat nausea. You wouldn't let yourself stay this way without doing something about it - the same goes for honoring yourself enough to get what is due you. FYI: A wig can also be a tax-deductible expense. If you suffered hair loss as a result of a medical condition like cancer or alopecia and you purchase a wig, the IRS allows you to deduct the cost.

Please note: Not all insurance companies cover wigs (cranial prosthesis); however, many do. Your reimbursement will depend on your particular policy details. Some insurance companies may pay up to 50 percent, and others, like Blue Cross which has recently changed its rules, may pay up to only $400. Many times, it really will depend on your policy.

There are no guarantees as not every company reimburses, but you should try.

Insurance Coverage for Medical Wigs

Will Insurance Cover the Cost of a Medical Wig?

If you have a medical condition such as Alopecia, Trichotillomania or you’re a cancer patient looking for a chemotherapy wig for hair loss, you may have insurance coverage to offset the cost of your medical wig.

Because wigs for cancer patients and other health conditions, are not for cosmetic purposes, they may qualify for reimbursement covered by your health insurance. Many private insurance companies now cover all or some of the cost of a medical wig as long as you have a prescription. It’s not uncommon to receive reimbursement of 80-100% of the cost of a medical wig.

It’s important to know that in order to qualify, most insurance companies, require a qualifying medical diagnosis given by your treating physician which could make you eligible for reimbursement for your medical wig also called Cranial Prosthesis.

When looking over your insurance policy to verify your coverage the information will likely be listed under the section called: Durable Medical Equipment.
Note: Just because you don’t see cranial hair prosthesis listed, it does not automatically mean you don’t have coverage. Approval can be obtained by calling your insurance company and getting a pre-authorization.

When filing your claim for insurance coverage for your medical wig, it’s vital that you use the correct terminology and diagnosis codes assigned by your prescribing physician when submitting your reimbursement claim.

Some common terms for medical wigs include:

  • cranial prosthesis (CP)
  • hair prosthesis
  • cranial hair prosthesis
  • extra-cranial prosthesis.
