Why Use Dry Shampoo for Wigs
Human Hair Wigs:
Unlike real hair that grows from your scalp, human hair wigs are unable to produce its own oils to protect the hair. Everytime you wash your wig you are stripping away precious moisture that keeps the wig healthy. This moisture must be replaced and locked in on a regular basis with deep conditioning or leave in conditioners.
By using dry shampoos you are protecting your investment by extending the time between washings. This will improve the health and viability of your human hair wig in the long-term.
Synthetic Wigs:
Sometimes synthetic wigs will come with an unnatural shine. Dry shampoo is a great, easy way to combat this issue.
Why every wig wearer should have dry shampoo on hand:
- Picture it, we've all been here. You had a hard time sleeping, woke up late and need to hurry off to work. Your wig is a hot mess. You were so tired you forgot to put your wig bonnet on before you fell asleep and now it's half matted to the side of your face and unfortunately you can't just throw on your favorite (bad hair day) go-to hat at your workplace. Who has time to wash and restyle? Nobody. Using dry shampoo is a quick and easy way to refresh and style your hair when you need to get out the door quick-fast.
- Now, if you are anything like me, being outside and/or short getaways are the best. Here's where the power of dry shampoo really stands out. Whether it's a weekend beach getaway or backpacking through Italy, water and time to wash your wig isn’t always easy to come by. Dry shampoo can get you through those short weeks road tripping down the coast, or camping in the desert.
- Imagine you have been trying a new look sported on twitter. The only problem is you’ve attempted it three times now to no avail. Now, your hair is coated with excess product and frizzed to the max from constant brushing and teasing. Giving a quick spray of dry shampoo can get your hair back to a fresh start to try again.
- A lot of people use dry shampoo on their wigs not only to protect and refresh their wig, but to add volume. If you have a wig that may be on the thinner side dry shampoo can add a substantial amount of volume easily.
How To Use Dry Shampoo on a Human Hair or Synthetic Wig Properly
Dry shampooing application is extremely easy and straightforward. But, are you really doing it correctly?
Every dry shampoo manufacturer will have recommendations on how to apply dry shampoo, however, at the very basic core, these are the steps you'll need to be aware of when it comes to applying dry shampoo to a wig.
You can perform these steps while wearing your wig or by placing your wig on a wig stand. Below is what the Batiste dry shampoo brand recommends.
Step 1: SHAKE - Start by shaking the bottle. A tip often missed, especially if you're in a rush to get out the door. By shaking the bottle well before use, you help mix up all the good stuff which in turn, makes the dry shampoo more effective. This will also minimize any white powdery residue.
Step 2: SPRAY - Spray onto the root sections of your human hair wig, using long sweeping motions. Avoid the helicopter or halo. Also, avoid using too much product.
IMPORTANT: Spray about 8-10 inches away from your wig.
Step 3: SET & MESSAGE - Let the dry shampoo formula soak in for at least 30 seconds, then massage in using your fingers or a brush.
NOTE: For higher powder levels, the visible powders on your hair actually cleanses and deodorizes your hair. Powders will disappear after massaging in.
Step 4: STYLE - Go ahead and style as usual.
Dry Shampoo Application for Wigs Hack
- Apply dry shampoo to a hair brush. Spray about 8 inches from your brush. Get some powder on your bristles (not too much!)
- Distribute product. Brush through your wig.
- Style your hair and you're good to go!
How Often Should I Apply Dry Shampoo?
Dry shampoo is not meant to replace shampooing your wig using water. It doesn't clean your wig. It's just a temporary way to refresh your wig to get you through until your next wash day. Occasional use will be fine, just don't go crazy and apply dry shampoo for days on end. As with all things, moderation is key.
