How to Make a Wig Look Less Shiny in 3 Easy Steps

Posted on July 25 2018

How to make a wig look less shiny is one of the most asked questions we get when it comes to synthetic wigs. Generally, the main factor that can make a wig look unnatural is a pesky shine that is most often found in synthetic wigs. This shine is due to the plastic used to create the hair fiber. In human hair wigs it can be due to a coating placed on the hair.

How to Remove Shine From Your Wig

The best and absolute tried and true way to remove shine in a wig is dry shampoo.

What Exactly is Dry Shampoo?

Dry shampoo is basically a powder spray that gives people a water free option to  cleanse their hair. It works by absorbing excess sebum and other scalp oils that built up on the root of hair. It also a great option to freshen up your hair and leaves it smelling fresher. However, when used on shiny wigs it dulls the unnatural shine to create a more realistic look.

How to Apply Dry Shampoo To Your Wig

  • Step 1:

Shake the dry shampoo can a few times and hold it about the length of the can from your wig (8-12 inches). You can spray it while you are wearing your wig or just holding it in your hand. Spray on the root lightly starting at where you part your hair, and then divide the hair into smaller sub sections to ensure the whole wig gets product.

  • Step 2:

You'll want to eyeball how much dry shampoo product you will need. keep spraying on your wig until the shine is removed to your satisfaction. If the dry shampoo spray still feels a bit damp to the touch, you can set a blow dryer to the lowest, coolest setting and blow dry the wig until dry.

  • Step 3:

Use a paddle brush to brush through the hair and disperse the dry shampoo throughout the entire wig.

Useful Tips When Using Dry Shampoo

  • Avoid spraying too close to your wig—it will prevent the product from being evenly distributed.
  • Less is more. Spray sparingly having too much dry shampoo can make your hair look too dull.
  • Dry shampoo should only be applied to your wig dry. Never apply to a wet wig.
  • Don’t start rubbing it in immediately after spraying it on—give it a few minutes to dry on the hair.
