How Long Do Lace Front Wigs Last?

When you’re looking to purchase a lace front wig you can invest your hard earned cash in, one of the main factors to consider is how long will it last.

On average, a new lace front wig can last between 3 months to 1 year when worn daily. If you take very good care of your lace front wig, then it can last several years. The longest-lasting lace front wigs are made from Virgin Human Hair, which can last for many years if maintained well.

However, since not all lace front wigs are created equal and everyone's lifestyle is different, it can be difficult to estimate a lace front wig's longevity. With that said, I decided to present the following guide to give you a better understanding of what longevity is possible with a lace front wig.

How Long Would Your Lace Front Wig Last – And How To Make It Last Longer

There are four main factors that are essential to determine how long a lace front wig will last:

1. Lace Front Wig Hair Quality

So, here's the deal. Lace front wigs can be made from either virgin human hair, remy human hair, non-remy human hair and synthetic hair fiber or a human hair, synthetic hair fiber blend, but I'll talk about that last one another day. Each of these materials have a life span that varies significantly.

    2. How Often Do You Wear Your Lace Front Wig

How often you wear your lace front wig plays a role as well in how long your lace front wig will last. If you wear your lace front wig everyday vs. occasionally your lace front wig will have a shorter lifespan by default.

Active lifestyles are also part of the puzzle as the more you move and sweat in your lace front wig the less lifespan your wig will have.

    3. How Do You Apply Your Lace Front Wig

The best lace front wig application to keep your wig lasting longer is by choosing a glueless lace front wig cap that you can take off at night and put on during the day.

The glue and/or tape method of applying lace front wigs are damaging and will shorten the lifespan of your wig over time. Lace front wigs have delicate hair knots that will eventually be pulled out over time due to the glue and/or tape adhesive.

The sew-in method is easier on your wig as no glue or tape is applied, however, I would caution that over time this method may cause the hair to shed prematurely. It is important to keep the wig cap clean, dry and free from bacteria that can grow on the hair knot. Once bacteria has formed on the hair knot it will cause the knots to weaken and break off. Keeping the wig clean and moisture free is a tough task with this application method.

    4. Wig Maintenance Tips to Extend the Life of a Lace Front Wig

    • Brush through your lace front wig several times a day. If your lace front wig is curly you can finger comb her.
    • Wash your lace front wig weekly or at least bi-weekly if you wear her on a daily basis. Your lace front wig will tell you when she needs to be cleansed/conditioned either by her smell or just that dirty hair feeling.
    • Use hair products that are free from drying sulfates and parabens.
    • If you wear your lace front wig to bed always braid your hair and wear a satin wig cap. This will prevent friction from damaging your hair.
    • Lace front wig hair cannot produce any natural oils to protect the hair like our natural scalp's produce. Applying a hair oil will help keep her healthy.

I have a rotation of oils I use for my lace front wigs, but Moroccan oil is one of my favorites.

What Types of Lace Front Wigs Last the Longest?

My absolute favorite type of lace front wig is made with Virgin Human Hair. Virgin hair is the cream of the crop, its considered any hair that has its cuticle intact and the hair's cuticles are running in the same direction. In addition, the hair has never been color treated or chemically treated in any way. It last the longest hands down.

    💭 What are hair cuticles?
Hair cuticles are a protective layer of cells that lay flat on each strand of hair and face in one direction (like roof tiles). They protect the hair from damage. Without this layer, human hair will become brittle and damage very easily.

VIRGIN HUMAN HAIR LACE FRONT WIGS
    Pros Cons
    • You can dye this hair darker
    • You can lighten this hair
    • You can chemically process this hair (perm)
    • You can bleach the knots
    • Can swim while wearing (we recommend braiding the hair or securing it)
    • Looks natural
    • Expensive $$$$

How Long Do Remy Human Hair Lace Front Wigs Last?

Similar to virgin hair, Remy hair has its cuticle intact and the hair cuticles are all facing the same direction. However, remy hair has been either color treated or chemically processed such as a processed wave, curl or highlights have been added.

REMY HUMAN HAIR LACE FRONT WIGS
    Pros Cons
    • You can dye the hair darker
    • Lasts longer
    • Low maintenance
    • Looks natural
    • Expensive $$$

    Estimated Lifespan
Everyday Wear (Hair Replacement / Protective Styles)
6 months to 1+ year or more
    Occasional Wear (Special Occasions)
    1 - 2+ years or more

How Long Do Non-Remy Human Hair Lace Front Wigs Last?

This type of hair is the most widely available and most used in the hair industry today. Contrary to the above-mentioned human hair types Non-Remy hair does not have its cuticle intact. The cuticles do not run in the same direction and are chemically striped away to provide a temporary smooth "tangle-free" performance.

NON-REMY HUMAN HAIR LACE FRONT WIGS
    Pros Cons
    • Budget friendly $$
    • Readily available
    • You can dye the hair darker
    • Cannot lighten hair
    • Cannot bleach knots (unless it is natural color unprocessed)
    • Not recommended to submerge hair in water, must be gently combed while using a water spray bottle to wet gradually before cleansing
    • High wig care maintenance
    • No swimming/spa/sauna
    • Gentle pH balanced haircare products must be used
    Estimated Lifespan
Everyday Wear (Hair Replacement / Protective Styles)
    3 to 6+ months
    Occasional Wear (Special Occasions)
    6 months - 1 year or more

How Long Do Synthetic Hair Fiber Lace Front Wigs Last?

Synthetic fibers range from low quality costume wigs to higher quality heat style tolerant wigs made for everyday wear. For this guide I'm going to refer to high heat tolerant wigs made for everyday wear.

    SYNTHETIC LACE FRONT WIGS
    Pros Cons

    • Short lifespan
    • Less natural looking
    • Difficult to heat style

    Conclusion

Knowing how long lace front wigs last is important for people who are considering buying a lace front wig for the first time.

A lace front wig will last around three to six months if you do not maintain it properly, and it will last around six months to one year if you do an average amount of maintenance.

However, if you take exceptional care of your lace front wig and go the extra mile to preserve its integrity, then it can last several years.

Longevity estimates are based on averages and are closely linked to the hair quality, lifestyle and the wear and tear aspect of a lace front wig. They are just estimates. Remember, there are many factors that go into the longevity of a lace front wig.

If you want a lace front wig that will last a long time, then buy one from a reputable brand.

Hair quality standards are not regulated. So, you may purchase hair labeled as Remy hair, but discover it was really Non-Remy. In most instances by the time you discover it was not Remy hair you've already used the product and cannot return it. For example: A majority of hair from China labeled as Remy hair is actually Non-Remy hair.

When buying a lace front wig, Virgin and (authentic) Remy Human Hair lace front wigs tend to last the longest. And if you want one to last you a many years, consider a Virgin Human Hair lace front wig. At the end of the day the investment in an exceptional high quality lace front wig is worth it.
