Bleached Knots vs. Unbleached Knots: Everything You Need To Know

If you're a newbie to lace wigs choosing whether you should get bleached knots vs. unbleached knots can be a tricky decision in the universe of lace wig opinions.

Bleached knots and Unbleached knots can affect how natural your lace wig looks. It can also determine how long your lace wig will last.

Most people are either for bleached knots or for unbleached knots, there is no in between.

Now, you’re probably wondering: What do I choose?

I’ll answer that in a few. But first, let’s get to know Bleached knots and Unbleached knots better first.

The Difference Between Bleached Knots and Unbleached Knots

All hand-tied lace front wigs are made meticulously by tying individual strands of hair onto a lace mesh base creating a knot at the base. This technique is called ventilating.

When darker hair is used these knots appear as small dots on the lace base that are noticeable in appearance.

Lighter hair colored lace wigs or blonde lace wigs do not need bleached knots because the knots are already light in color.

Types of Knots

Single Knot ventilation techniques are usually always performed at the hairline, which creates a very tiny knot. Some lace wigs are made entirely using the single knot technique, but tend to be more expensive.

The Double Knot hair ventilation technique begins generally after the hairline and all over the rest of the wig cap. Double knots are more secure and use typically more hair strands, however, the knot is significantly larger in appearance.

Unbleached Knots
Pros Cons
Wig will last longer

Reduced hair shedding
⚠️The knots will be visible

⚠️Unnatural in appearance

Bleached Knots

Bleached knots is achieved by using a chemical process in which hair lightening product is applied the the hair knots only to lift the hair color any where from 2 to 6 shades.

This type of process chemically alters the hair. It opens the cuticle and removes the color in an irreversible chemical reaction.

By making the knots lighter it camouflages the tiny knots and creates an illusion that the hair is growing from your scalp.

Bleached Knots
Pros Cons
Looks very natural

It make the hair appear as though it is growing from your scalp
⚠️It takes some skill to perform the bleaching

⚠️The hair will shed faster

⚠️Bleaching will weaken the knots

⚠️The knots on jet black hair cannot be bleached at all unless the hair is it's natural color and not dyed.

⚠️The higher the lift the weaker the knot will be

What If My Knots Won't Bleach?

Only human hair virgin or remy with the cuticle intact can be bleached and non-remy hair that has its natural color. The knots on most low quality lace wigs or synthetic blend lace wigs will not change color with bleaching.

Now here's where it get's interesting. You can fake bleached knots.

Faux Bleached Knots

If bleaching knots using a chemical process doesn't sound appealing to you, why not try Faux Bleached Knots as an alternative to bleaching knots?

What is Faux Bleached Knots?

Faux knot bleaching is done by using a temporary product such as make-up: foundation or powder.

The knots are coated with the make-up to create the illusion of bleached knots, but will not disturb the integrity of the knot like traditional knot bleaching does.

You can find knot concealer made specifically for lace wigs here on Amazon.
